I want to tell you a story that illustrates the importance of applying occam’s razor towards your aims for your health and shape (the principle of parsimony I utilize for all of my clients).
This story is important because it highlights the biggest delineating factor I’ve seen in those who are successful in losing the weight and actually keeping it off, versus those who relapse over and over.
That factor is consistency…
Here’s what happened …
A 10-year-old boy was trying to get a report written on birds that had been assigned three months earlier.
Procrastination’s bill had come due, and the boy sat at the kitchen table close to tears. He was surrounded by paper and pencils and unopened books about birds, immobilized by the hugeness of the task ahead.
The boy’s father sat down beside him, put his arm around his son and said,…
“Bird by bird, buddy. Just take it bird by bird.”
The boy took that single piece of advice and got through his assignment.
And the incident made such an impression on the boy’s younger sister Anne, that she later used that story as the foundation for an entire book.
Titled, “Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life,” it’s considered one of the best books about writing ever penned, and Lamott has gone onto a distinguished career that includes a Guggenheim Fellowship and an induction into the California Hall of Fame.
Now here’s your big takeaway from all this …
Most people will procrastinate when it comes to losing the weight.
That or they will procrastinate till the last minute only to finally go at it ALL or NOTHING, lose some weight and then become part of the 98% that puts the weight right back on.
Repeating this process several times over before eventually giving up.
The people who are a part of the 2% take it “bird by bird”.
They understand the power of thinking big and acting small.
That small wins stack up to BIG victories.
This is what leads to CONSISTENCY
However, there are some crucial things to keep in mind if you want to BUILD the HABIT of staying more consistent towards your goals.
To become more consistent you must:
Have a plan AND the structure in place to take the thinking out of it and see it through. You’ve got enough to worry about.
Build a high level of self acceptance and optimism which leads to more self-integrity (all common traits in the most successful leaders I’ve worked with)
Become a leader in your own life. Who are you accountable to at the end of the day anyways?
STOP LYING to yourself or others about where you’re at. More importantly, STOP omitting TRUTHS about where you want to be
